“Nearly half a century later, the facility continues its growth…”

Swedish Match, a tobacco manufacturer originally opened its Owensboro plant in 1973. Nearly half a century later, the facility continues its growth. In accordance with the company’s vision of a world without cigarettes, Swedish Match began a plant expansion to focus on the ZYN product line. ZYN is a tobacco-free oral nicotine pouch. This specific product line has experienced tremendous early market success. By completing the expansion, the US market will shift from Sweden to the Owensboro facility. The project includes a 250,000 square foot plant expansion including a production area for ZYN, packaging area, warehouse space as well as support space.

  • Process and packaging areas designed to maintain 65 degrees F with 25% RH. The low temperature, low humidity environment needed to maintain product quality during powder creation, processing, and packaging
  • ESFR sprinkler systems with draft curtains to allow flexible rack storage without the need for in-rack sprinklers. Upgrades to the existing campus fire pump systems and flow testing were required to meet the ESFR flow and pressure requirements
  • Foam suppression system used in areas where ethanol was present to protect the facility
  • Industrial waste drains, containment, and monitoring stations designed to protect the sanitary sewer system
  • Medium voltage electrical distribution for the building consisting of five services each with pad-mounted medium voltage switches, 2000kVA pad-mounted medium voltage transformers, and 3000 amp, 277/480-volt low voltage services
  • Site lighting of parking areas, drive lanes, and walking canopies
  • Warehouse and process lighting per the needs of the facility
  • Design of the electrical power and lighting for hazardous storage and process areas
