“EXPECTED TO SERVICE 160,000 RESIDENTS…”

Kerr-Greulich Engineers, Inc. is proud to have been an integral part of the completion of the Louisville Free Public Library’s master plan for 3 new regional libraries. The new South Central Regional Library is a state of the art, 40,000 square/foot, free-standing facility overlooking an acre of preserved woodland expected to service 160,000 residents of South Central Jefferson County. The building offers several small study rooms, including spaces for children and teen recreation. The library was designed for an abundance of natural light and features an open layout structure favoring an underfloor HVAC system. Kerr-Greulich Engineers implemented a variety of designs that minimize energy consumption while preserving library functionality and building aesthetic.

  • Energy analysis performed with an architect prior to selection of building materials
  • Daylighting design contributing to a 10% reduction in energy consumption
  • Geo-exchange well system utilizing water to heat pumps and air handling units
  • Radiant heat built into wall assembly to maximize heating efficiency in high ceiling areas
  • Lighting control design promoting natural lighting over artificial
  • Mechanical mezzanine improving maintenance access
  • Underfloor HVAC ventilation designed to minimize energy during low traffic times
