How Geothermal Engineering Supports a Sustainable Vision at Origin Park

Every building begins with a vision.

 

For River Heritage Conservancy, that vision is Origin Park, a 430-acre riverfront park that includes trails, recreation, and gathering spaces. The conservancy’s goal is to create a place that will serve the community for generations while demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship.

 

One of the first buildings to bring that vision to life is The Vista at Origin Park, an event center designed to host meetings, celebrations, community events, and educational programs. Because sustainability was a guiding principle for the project, the building was designed as an all-electric facility with no natural gas.

 

Achieving that goal required more than selecting efficient equipment. It called for a heating and cooling system that would provide year-round comfort while reducing energy use over the building’s lifetime. Kerr-Greulich Engineers partnered with the project team to design a geothermal system that helped turn that vision into reality.

 

What Is Geothermal Heating and Cooling?

Geothermal systems use the consistent temperature found below the earth’s surface to help heat and cool a building. While outdoor temperatures can fluctuate significantly throughout the year, the ground maintains a much more stable temperature, creating an efficient source for heating and cooling.

 

A geothermal system circulates fluid through underground piping, where it exchanges heat with the earth before returning to the building. During colder months, the system draws heat from the ground to warm the building. During warmer months, it transfers heat from the building back into the earth.

 

Because the system is not constantly working against changing outdoor conditions, geothermal can reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs, and provide reliable comfort throughout the year. Geothermal systems also typically have a longer lifespan than many traditional HVAC systems because most of the equipment is protected inside the building and the piping is installed underground so it experiences less exposure to the elements.”  

 

For a project like The Vista, those benefits aligned closely with River Heritage Conservancy’s goal of creating a sustainable, efficient gathering space for the community.

 

Turning a Vision Into Reality

Choosing geothermal was an important step, but designing the system required careful planning and collaboration.

 

At The Vista, the geothermal system includes 28 wells drilled approximately 500 feet below ground. Those wells connect through a central vault with three loops before serving the building’s heating and cooling equipment, including multiple water-source heat pumps and a dedicated outdoor air unit that provides fresh ventilation throughout the facility.

 

While much of this infrastructure is hidden once construction is complete, it plays a critical role in delivering the comfortable indoor environment visitors experience during meetings, celebrations, and community events.

 

Solving Complex Challenges

One of the biggest challenges with geothermal projects isn’t the technology itself. It’s coordinating all of the pieces that make the system work.

 

At The Vista, the geothermal well field had to fit alongside parking areas, landscaping, underground utilities, and other site features. Inside the building, geothermal systems also require more equipment than many conventional HVAC systems, making early coordination essential.

 

As the project evolved, changes to the site and building layout required portions of the geothermal design to be revised multiple times. Each adjustment required our engineering team to work closely with the architect and contractor to keep the project aligned with its original goals.

 

By working through those challenges together, we were able to preserve the conservancy’s vision while delivering a system that supports the building’s long-term performance.
