SUMMARY

The Director of Mechanical Engineering (DME) is in responsible charge of all Mechanical Engineering (ME) activities. ME is defined as plumbing, fire protection and HVAC.

REPORTS TO:  President

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Requirements

  • Oversees the development of mechanical designs and documents.
  • Understands and interprets architectural, structural, and civil engineering drawings and designs so that MEP elements can be coordinated into the overall design package.
  • Aware of industry standards and changes.
  • Coordinates ME designs with clients and external design professionals, and with other technical disciplines within the firm.
  • Maintains high-level of knowledge on ME products, materials, and techniques. Can provide innovative technical solutions appropriately and effectively.
  • Responsible for creating technical processes and Standard Operating Procedures for ME staff.
  • Capable of identifying and evaluating mechanical system options including developing initial, operating, and maintenance costs.
  • Understands and continues to know available mechanical systems and how those systems apply to projects the KGEI provides.
  • Responsible for assuring the technical quality of ME elements for all projects.
  • Provides analysis of innovation vs. risk on projects, and sets appropriate direction for projects based on this analysis.
  • Review and remain up-to-date on code modifications.
  • Participates on project teams and reviews mechanical design and engineering work of others.
  • Oversees document production to ensure the highest levels of documents are provided to clients.
  • Is in responsible charge of the ME design on all projects. Signs off on project documentation and may seal documents.
  • Thoroughly knowledgeable in administrative and technical codes and skilled in their application and incorporation into designs.
  • With guidance from President on innovation and profitable markets, the DME sets goals within the ME department that keeps staff knowledge base valuable to clients.
  • Coaches Project Managers/design teams and CA staff to resolve conflicts in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ensures that staff has IT tools and training to effectively and efficiently perform their work.

Leadership

  • Works with Executive Team to organize the ME staff relative to other staff within the organization, and to define the ME practice areas for the firm.
  • Plan resources, effectively delegate’s tasks to less senior staff, and assign team members to project teams.
  • Provides effective interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Assists President in determining staffing levels and assists recruiting efforts.
  • Leads, develops, mentors, and evaluates ME staff.
  • Provides feedback and supports career development of ME staff.
  • Mediates and resolves conflicts and issues between Project Managers/design teams and CA staff in an effective and efficient manner.

 Financial/Budgeting

  • Estimates project scopes and internal project budgets accurately.
  • Develops and provides economic justification for technical decisions.
  • Understands construction budgeting, timelines, schedules.
  • Assures all work is completed according to standard engineering practices, minimizing potential liability against the Company-Liability control authority.
  • Meets staffing needs and goals for ME practice within established annual budget.
  • Responsible for the operating budget of the ME portion of the company.

Business Development

  • Develops and maintains positive client relationships. Communicates commonly and frequently with clients and external parties.
  • Produces proposals including scopes of work and associated cost estimates. Accurately and routinely estimates level of effort necessary to achieve project requirements.
  • Clearly understands the company’s basic operating model and revenue producing scheme. Can contribute in the planning and execution of revenue production and cost management related to ME staff and practice.
  • Develops new clients and new revenue streams each year. Supports the continued success with existing clients.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • BS and/or MS in Mechanical Engineering from an Accredited School.
  • Post-graduate (MBA) business knowledge and/or prior P&L experience.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer. Must be licensed in KY or ability to obtain within 90 days, and willingness to achieve PE within 12 months in all necessary states (through reciprocity or NCEES).
  • LEED AP certification and added certifications from a recognized organization.
  • Skilled in personal computer use, general office productivity software, and common ME-specific applications.
  • Minimum 15 years directly applicable design/engineering experience in HVAC system design, equipment selection, and operation.
  • Experience and knowledge in green building practices and LEED, plumbing design, and fire protection design.
  • Knowledge of applicable mechanical and building codes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate to all levels of the organization with employees, supervisors, clients, and regulatory authorities and other external parties.

SUMMARY

Lead the commissioning efforts that effectively authenticates building systems and equipment, interfaces in the commissioning scope of work, and verifies that systems are installed, tested and operate in accordance with engineering plans, specifications, contract documents, and owner requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Requirements

  • Perform design reviews on project drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, and shop drawings for compliance with owner’s project requirements, coordination issues between disciplines, basis of design, and sustainability goals.
  • Prepare commissioning plan, pre-functional checklist, functional performance tests to conform to the project specifications and drawings for the following equipment:
    o HVAC equipment
    o BAS control systems
    o Fire alarm
    o Lighting control systems.
    o Standard and standby electrical distribution systems
    o UPS and standby generators
  • Document issues identified at all phases of the project and ensure their resolution.
  • Prepare reports documenting project progress, commissioning issues, training of owner’s personnel, functional test results, and achieving the energy savings set out in the sustainability goals.
  • Compile final commissioning report for the owner.
  • Schedule and direct periodic commissioning meetings.
  • Attend construction and coordination meetings where needed.
  • Ability to review and comment on TAB reports.
  • Conduct repeat site visits as necessary until project sign-off is accomplished.

Leadership

  • Promotion, selling, and executing commissioning services.
  • Fostering team collaboration between owners, designers, and contractors.
  • Client contact and business development capabilities would be required as this individual would be a “seller/do-er” at first as we build backlog.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • 5+ years in the mechanical and electrical design and/or the construction field.
  • Bachelors or Associates Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Able to demonstrate experience and expertise in complex M&E building systems.
  • Excellent communication skills: written and verbal.
  • Works independently with limited supervision and direction.
  • Familiarity with BCA/ASHRAE/ACG, etc. procedures and protocols.
  • Certified through one of the recognized commissioning authorities is preferred.
  • Utilizes the following software to complete tasks accurately and on-time: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to visit project sites as necessary.

SUMMARY

The Staff HVAC Designer leads design/drafting production for projects and is responsible for graphic production and arrangement of construction plans. The Staff Designer is a member of a Project Team and may be the lead designer directing the work of Entry Designers and working closely with Engineers, other designers, Project Managers, and clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Requirements

  • Independent ability to prepare the framework of drawing sets with AutoCad and Revit based on KGEI design guidelines and sheet set up templates.
  • Understands building construction means and methods enough to identify when a design strategy will not work and able to propose alternate options.
  • Able to effectively communicate and coordinate with civil, architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical with project manager assistance.
  • Responsible for producing complete set of construction documents with minimal guidance from a Senior Designer or Project Engineer.
  • Analyze and evaluate building codes to implement compliant design strategies. Includes ability to effectively communicate and obtain favorable interpretations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to size and design piping and ductwork for HVAC systems.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform calculations for sizing equipment. Calculations will be reviewed with a Senior Designer or Project Engineer for final equipment decisions.
  • Demonstrate ability to research code and communicate with code officials to obtain favorable interpretations.
  • Knowledgeable of current industry standards such as ASHRAE and NFPA guidelines.
  • Familiar with ASME 31B and SMACNA Duct Construction Standards.
  • Ability to evaluate cost differences between design options and make design decisions that minimize construction cost.
  • Learns to survey existing building conditions with guidance from Senior Designer.
  • Provides input for improvements in design and drafting techniques.
  • Develops a working knowledge of special design circumstances in commercial, educational and healthcare facilities.

SUMMARY

The Staff Mechanical Engineer works on project teams for a variety of projects; including repetitious quick turnaround projects as well as major new construction designs. The Staff Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the work of other engineers and designers at his direction. The Staff Mechanical Engineer works closely with designers, other engineers and project managers to develop engineering documents per client specifications and Kerr-Greulich Engineers, Inc. (KGEI) quality standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Requirements

  • Demonstrate the ability to prepare drawing sets with AutoCad and Revit based on KGEI design guidelines and sheet set up templates without supervision.
  • Able to perform complete mechanical system calculations, analysis, and design. (examples include heating and cooling calculations, energy modeling, ventilation, pressure, sound, domestic hot water demand, etc)
  • Self-educates on each hvac system type in “ASHRAE Systems and Equipment” and demonstrates the ability to design systems including air distribution, split and unitary d/x systems, variable air volume systems, variable refrigerant systems, chilled/hot water systems, and neutral temperature hydronic systems.
  • Demonstrate ability to select/size D/X and Unitary equipment and design space requirements with minimal supervision. Develops ability to select/size equipment for other mechanical systems and design space requirements for coordination with other disciplines.
  • For hydronic systems or campus systems, capable of performing iterative calculations and prepare data for discussion and review with Engineering Director Engineer for final equipment decisions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to create equipment specifications and uses KGEI master specifications for material specifications.
  • Assists Senior Engineers developing life cycle cost evaluation and preparing reports.
  • Understands building construction means and methods enough to identify when a design strategy will not work and able to propose alternate options.
  • Demonstrates the ability to size and design piping and ductwork for HVAC systems.
  • Develops the ability to size and design domestic hot water and natural gas systems.
  • Develops the ability to review equipment and material submittals from contractors and provide written direction to contractors to ensure the construction meets the design document requirements.
  • Knowledgeable of current industry standards ASHRAE and NFPA guidelines.
  • Familiar with ASME 31B and SMACNA Duct Construction Standards.
  • Develops knowledge of construction cost and impact of cost on overall budget. Assists others with estimating construction costs and preparing data to share with outside consultants.
  • Reviews equipment and material submittals from contractors and provides constructive responses to ensure equipment ordered will meet the design intent in the construction documents.
  • Ability to evaluate cost differences between design options and make design decisions that minimize construction cost.
  • Learns to survey existing building conditions with guidance from Senior Engineers/Designers.
  • Develops a working knowledge of special design circumstances in commercial, educational and healthcare facilities.
  • Capable of producing a complete set of drawing documents at any stage of design: schematic, design development, and bid construction documents. Assistance from drafters and designers will only be available intermittently.
  • In the process of learning building construction means and how to provide engineering solutions that are constructible in the field.
  • Develops effective communication to coordinate with civil, architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical with project manager assistance.
  • Analyze and evaluate building codes to implement compliant design strategies. Includes ability to effectively communicate and obtain favorable interpretations.

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited school.
  • Minimum of four years’ experience.
  • EIT or PE preferred.
  • LEED preferred.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and use participatory decision-making skills.
  • Ability to produce legible freehand drafting and lettering for communication of design intent to others.
  • Proficient in the following software tools:
    – AutoCad and other drawing technology such as DrawingTrueView, Navisworks, Blue beam, Adobe PDF, SketchUp, etc
    – BIM/REVIT experience is preferred.
    – Microsoft excel for functions and calculations
    – Microsoft word to self-perform word processing on specifications and reports.
    – Microsoft PowerPoint to provide presentations to internal management team.
